highCVE-2025-56363

CVE-2025-56363 matter vulnerability

A null pointer dereference vulnerability exists in the Matter SDK (connectedhomeip) before 1.4.0, affecting the ReadRevisionAttribute function used in multiple clusters (Channel, Account Login, TargetNavigator, etc.). The function lacks proper validation of the delegate pointer before dereferencing. A remote unauthenticated attacker can exploit this issue by sending a crafted read request, causing the device to crash (denial of service). This issue has been confirmed in SDK version v1.4 (commit ab3d5ae).

How to fix it

CVE-2025-56363 affects csa-iot matter and is rated high. A null pointer dereference vulnerability exists in the Matter SDK (connectedhomeip) before 1.4.0, affecting the ReadRevisionAttribute function used in multiple clusters (Channel, Account Login, TargetNavigator, etc.). Fix this first on exposed systems, shared services, and user-facing workflows. The practical fix is to upgrade Matter SDK connectedhomeip to the latest vendor-supported release that includes the delegate validation fix, then verify the risky path is closed.

  1. Inventory every server, app, package, desktop, device, container, or workflow that uses csa-iot matter.
  2. Check the installed version and configuration against CVE-2025-56363 and the linked advisory.
  3. Apply the vendor fix: upgrade Matter SDK connectedhomeip to the latest vendor-supported release that includes the delegate validation fix.
  4. Limit untrusted Matter device traffic and test command handling in a safe lab before restoring exposure.
  5. Disable or isolate the affected feature if you cannot update right away.
  6. Review device crash logs, restart spikes, and unusual Matter command traffic.
  7. Rotate secrets, rebuild affected systems, or reset sessions if you suspect compromise.

Verify the fix

  • Confirm csa-iot matter is running the patched version or the approved mitigation is active.
  • Confirm affected public, admin, API, desktop, storage, or device access is limited to trusted users.
  • Repeat a safe test of the risky workflow and confirm the issue no longer appears.
  • Review logs after the fix for crashes, bypass attempts, file access, or suspicious changes.
  • Save version, config, log, and scan evidence for your remediation record.
